Heat Press Temperature & Time Settings for DTF Transfers

The perfect press is the difference between a premium transfer and a failed one. Get the definitive temperature, time, and pressure settings for every fabric type.

Heat pressing is the final and arguably most critical step in the DTF process. The wrong temperature, time, or pressure can ruin an otherwise perfect transfer. Here are the settings that work.

Standard DTF Press Settings by Fabric

Cotton (100%)

ParameterSetting
Temperature300-325°F (150-163°C)
Time15-20 seconds
PressureMedium-firm (40-50 PSI)
PeelHot or cold (depends on film type)

Polyester (100%)

ParameterSetting
Temperature270-285°F (132-140°C)
Time10-15 seconds
PressureMedium (35-45 PSI)
PeelWarm or cold recommended
NoteLower temp to prevent dye migration

Cotton-Polyester Blends (50/50, 60/40)

ParameterSetting
Temperature285-305°F (140-152°C)
Time12-18 seconds
PressureMedium (35-45 PSI)
PeelWarm or cold

Nylon

ParameterSetting
Temperature250-270°F (121-132°C)
Time10-12 seconds
PressureLight-medium (30-40 PSI)
PeelCold only
NoteTest on scrap first — nylon is heat-sensitive

Denim

ParameterSetting
Temperature310-330°F (154-166°C)
Time18-25 seconds
PressureFirm (45-55 PSI)
PeelHot or cold

The Post-Press (Second Press)

After peeling the film, many professionals do a second press — called a "finish press" — to smooth the transfer and improve wash durability.

Finish Press Settings

  • Temperature: Same as initial press
  • Time: 5-10 seconds
  • Pressure: Medium
  • Cover: Use a Teflon sheet or silicone pad between press and transfer
  • Purpose: Smooths texture, improves adhesion, sets the adhesive fully

Troubleshooting Common Press Issues

Transfer doesn't stick

  • Temperature too low — increase by 10°F
  • Time too short — add 3-5 seconds
  • Pressure insufficient — increase pressure
  • Garment has moisture — pre-press garment for 3-5 seconds to remove moisture

Transfer is rough/textured

  • Pressure too low during initial or finish press
  • Excess adhesive powder wasn't fully shaken off before curing
  • Try a finish press with Teflon sheet

Colors look washed out

  • Temperature too high — reducing white ink opacity
  • Check your white ink density in RIP settings
  • Verify ICC profile is correct for your film type

Transfer cracks or peels after washing

  • Underpressed — increase time or temperature
  • Garment was contaminated (fabric softener, oils)
  • Adhesive powder wasn't fully cured before pressing
  • Customer washing at too high a temperature — include care instructions

Dye migration (ghosting on polyester)

  • Temperature too high for polyester content
  • Reduce temperature by 15-25°F
  • Use dye-blocker spray or low-temp DTF powder
  • Reduce press time

Equipment Recommendation

The Hotronix Air Fusion ProPlace IQ heat press offers precise digital temperature control, even pressure distribution via its air-operated mechanism, and the ProPlace alignment system that ensures accurate transfer placement — all critical factors for consistent DTF pressing.
