DTF Transfers on Hard Surfaces: Beyond T-Shirts

DTF isn't just for garments. Learn how to apply transfers to wood, leather, canvas bags, shoes, hats, and other surfaces to diversify your product line.

Most DTF operators focus exclusively on T-shirts and apparel, leaving significant revenue on the table. DTF transfers can be applied to dozens of non-traditional surfaces with the right techniques.

Compatible Surfaces

Leather and Faux Leather

  • Temperature: 270-290°F (lower than fabric to prevent damage)
  • Time: 8-12 seconds
  • Pressure: Light-medium (leather deforms under heavy pressure)
  • Peel: Cold peel only
  • Applications: Wallets, bags, journal covers, belts, patches
  • Tips: Test on a scrap piece first. Some leather finishes resist adhesion — lightly sand the surface

Canvas and Tote Bags

  • Temperature: 300-320°F
  • Time: 15-20 seconds
  • Pressure: Medium-firm
  • Peel: Hot or cold
  • Applications: Tote bags, backpacks, pencil cases, cosmetic bags
  • Tips: Place a pressing pillow inside the bag to create a flat surface and even pressure

Shoes and Sneakers

  • Temperature: 280-300°F
  • Time: 10-15 seconds
  • Pressure: Light-medium (shoes have curved surfaces)
  • Peel: Cold peel
  • Applications: Canvas sneakers, fabric shoes, shoe tongues
  • Tips: Use a hat press or small platen attachment for curved areas. Work in sections on complex surfaces

Hats and Caps

  • Temperature: 300-315°F
  • Time: 12-18 seconds
  • Pressure: Medium
  • Equipment: Hat press attachment or dedicated cap press
  • Applications: Baseball caps, beanies, bucket hats, visors
  • Tips: Curved surfaces require a curved platen. DTF works better than screen printing for small-run custom hats

Wood and MDF

  • Temperature: 320-340°F
  • Time: 20-30 seconds
  • Pressure: Firm
  • Peel: Hot peel
  • Applications: Signs, plaques, ornaments, coasters, cutting boards
  • Tips: Unfinished wood works best. Sealed/varnished wood may resist adhesion. Sand lightly and wipe clean before pressing

Denim

  • Temperature: 310-330°F
  • Time: 18-25 seconds
  • Pressure: Firm (denim is thick and textured)
  • Peel: Hot or cold
  • Applications: Jeans, jackets, denim bags, patches
  • Tips: The heavier the denim, the more time and pressure needed. Pre-press to flatten the weave

Patches and Appliqués

  • Temperature: 310-325°F
  • Time: 15-20 seconds
  • Pressure: Medium-firm
  • Applications: Iron-on patches, bag accessories, hat decorations
  • Tips: Print on DTF film, apply to twill or canvas backing, then cut to shape. Finish edges with embroidery or heat-cut

Quality Considerations

  • Always test on a scrap piece of any new surface before production
  • Durability varies by surface — garments get washed, wood signs don't
  • Hand feel matters less on hard goods but still matters on wearables
  • Include care instructions appropriate to the product, not just garments
  • Photography helps sell — showcase non-apparel products on your social media and website
